Psst, here from ADGS? Her honours project work is just below!
Josie Law is a passionate creative and the current treasurer for the Abertay Woman in Games Society. Inspired by the soundtracks of Okami, The Legend of Zelda, and Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, she now combines her narrative and compositional skills to create vivid worlds and memorable characters.
As each character she writes must have their own voice within the text, so too must they have one in their music; at the end of the day, she wants to present her stories in the best possible light through carefully crafted words, art, and song. She makes sure to treat every project she works on, both personal and professional, with a strict sense of purpose; once she commits to doing something, she’ll do it to the very best of her ability.

Improving documentation to assist in bridging the gap between composers and other disciplines within the games industry
</aside>
Within the United Kingdom, Music Composers make up only 0.5% of roles within the games industry, being the least reported role and one of the most underrepresented (Ukie, 2022). Over the past semester, Josie has investigated how best to bridge the gap between composers and other disciplines within the games industry. Through investigation into what causes communication breakdowns, industry standard audio design documentation, and current practices, she has collated these findings into an exemplar Audio Design Document for a hypothetical game. Using her written work, she demonstrates how the 0.5% can better connect and work with the remaining 95.5% of those within the industry.
Lack of understanding, communication issues, and unreasonable standards of work lead to problems which both parties end up blaming the other for. However, this is not a problem without a solution. Documentation used to aid onboarding can also be used as a tool to encourage open communication between disciplines, as well as setting expectations to appropriate standards from the beginning. A living ADD encourages collaboration, as well as providing a reference that can be used throughout a project.
Alongside the documentation, three music tracks were composed as an example to show how the document could be interpreted. Josie’s recommendation is to read the ADD for context first, then listen and read about and listen to the music afterwards!

Lilith Law DES404 The Future Beyond the Veil (Metis) Artefact 2201723.wav
As the primary antagonistic force within the game world, it felt important for Metis’ theme to have a sense of majesty. Yet despite betraying those around her, the narrative depicts her as a sympathetic, lonely figure.
Josie wanted her theme to reflect as such—slow, sombre main melodies and sweeping synths were used to convey both the vastness of space, and her deep loneliness.
Her motif is long, but not complex; the final three notes of it can be heard in both other tracks, demonstrating to the listener before they understand her true nature that she is more present in the narrative than they are led to initially believe.
Lilith Law DES404 Amser's Theme Artefact 2201723.wav
The references section of the ADD puts a major focus on instrumentation when it comes to the music representing the past. As Amser is the one who arrives there, the instrumentation of their track reflects as such.
It uses primarily acoustic instruments, many of which are associated with Celtic folk music, using quick fiddles and strings to push the melody forward. The dulcimer, associated with Scots and Irish immigrants, is also used. The piece is primarily in the Dorian mode, commonly associated with sea shanties (in particular Drunken Sailor) and as such has an almost nautical feel to it.
Additionally, the final three notes of Metis’ theme are played by the bells at the beginning, grounding her influence in the past as much as the future. Further techniques are used to give a sense of foreboding, even if not noticed initially by the listener; 12 bells chime at the start of the piece, evoking the feeling that time is running out somehow. The main melody in the chimes utilises the Dies Irae, a Latin hymn assumed to be written in the early 1200s that has found it’s use in modern media as a way to represent death and despair
Lilith Law DES404 God's Acre Artefact 2201723.wav
As this piece represents ambient music in the past, perhaps used in a safe area as a reprise for Amser, it’s far calmer than the other two pieces.
It uses similar instrumentation to Amser’s theme, though notably contains a harp and a pipe organ. The organ is associated primarily with religious music, so along with the peaceful, lilting melody, it creates an almost reverent atmosphere. This is appropriate of a place where Gods and mythical creatures are as common as any other form of life.
Where Metis’ theme is slow in a sombre manner, due to the instrumentation and melody God’s Acre feels peaceful and carries an air of respect to it. As with Amser’s theme, Metis’ motif is once again included, used as the last three notes of the first ocarina melody. Even in a place of peace, her influence stretches beyond what can be seen.
Josie attended the only state-funded specialist music school in Europe that offered full-time education from primary to high school. Over a period of nine years, she learnt music history, theory, composition and music technology. After achieving a wide variety of qualifications (See FAQs), she left high school and now applies the knowledge she gained to compose music in a wide variety of genres.
She’s composed music for Rookery Publications, specifically writing sea shanties and a carol to be used in their upcoming system agnostic TTRPG adventure, Ship of Fools. More information on this can be found on their Coiled Crown page.
She was the lead audio designer on Galactic Postal Servitude, a point-and-click deduction game that was the winner of DARE academy in 2025. For this, she composed multiple music tracks, worked in recording voice acting, and recorded and collated SFX.
Below are some examples of her Audio work:
Josie has spent years cultivating her skills in writing. From short works less that 500 words long, to novel-length stories spanning tens of chapters and thousands of words, breathing life into words is not something unfamiliar to her.
She specialises in character-based works, and particularly enjoys linking her musical compositions to the stories she writes. Dialogue in particular comes easy to her, as does ensuring each character has their own unique voice.
She worked as the Lead Narrative Designer on her DES207 team’s game, Under the Ice. The material she created for this is listed below, as well as a host of other projects she’s invested hours into.
